FAQs

What is Integrative Postpartum Consulting?

Integrative postpartum consulting is individualized, multifaceted support throughout the postpartum period through customized materials and regular virtual or in-person visits, starting in the third trimester and continuing through your baby’s first year of life. We prepare for, protect, and enrich the sacred time following a new baby’s birth to ensure the birthing parent and family move through this transformational period with knowledge and vitality.

Care is tailored to each family’s unique needs, drawing from conventional medicine and from the worlds of complementary and alternative medicine and traditional practices.

When are the visits? (Moonflower Package)

The first visit happens in the third trimester, and postpartum visits start in the first week after your baby is born all the way through their first year of life. We start with two postpartum visits per week in the first month, and visits decrease in frequency as baby gets older.

It is also certainly an option to do just one visit at a time, if that is what works best for you and your family.

The third trimester visit:

At the third trimester visit, we discuss your family’s vision, needs, expectations, and special considerations around the prepartum (before birth), birth and postpartum periods.  These can include mindfulness and mind-body techniques, recommendations from traditional medicine traditions (e.g., Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda) as well as addressing any medical or practical life questions, such as how to help life run as smoothly as possible after baby is born, so that the postpartum period can be focused on healing and cocooning with the sweet new form of your family.

We will look at your home space, paying special attention to the rooms you will use the most, to ensure you and your new family will be the most nourished and supported possible.

The third trimester visit also includes a guide that contains resources around preparing for birth, the transformational experience of birth, and the precious postpartum period for baby and family.

Post-partum visits:

Most Pediatricians see new babies at birth, 2 weeks after birth, and then not again until the baby is 2 months old.  But the first two months of baby’s life are a time of almost unimaginable change, so questions come up frequently, and families need support.  This is why we have 12 visits in the first 2 months, with the majority of the visits focused in the first month, as so many curiosities and concerns arise in the first few weeks after birth.

Month 1: Two 30 minute visits per week (or one 60 minute visit per week, per parent’s preference), starting with 2 visits the first week of life, on days 3 or 4 and again on days 6 or 7

Months 2-4: One 60 minute visit per week

Months 5-7: One 60 minute visit every 2 weeks

Months 8-12: One 60 minute visit per month

What happens during visits?

During visits, any curiosities and concerns can be addressed, including, but not in any way limited to: breastfeeding, pumping, infant care, nutrition, mindfulness practices, managing daily life needs, and any other questions that may come up during this time of intense change.  No question is too silly, small or inconsequential. Parents often tend to focus their curiosities and questions only around their sweet baby, but know that these visits are about your baby and also just as much about you and your entire family as a whole.

Ideally, the initial consulting visit happens in the beginning of the third trimester, since it is easier to set up expectations, as well as a support network, before the sleepless time of new parenthood.  This visit may be virtual or in person, to allow for visual exploration of the home environment.

All visits after your baby is born are virtual or via telephone.  Some people prefer telephone visits, as they allow maximum flexibility during the intense and often unpredictable newborn period.  Having to get ready for a visitor or even being seen on video can be too much in the beginning, and – both practically and emotionally – telephone encounters can often allow our visits to unobtrusively and seamlessly incorporate into the new rhythms that unfold within the family.

But I’ve already had my baby — can you still help me?

Absolutely! If you are discovering Moonflower later in pregnancy or even after your baby has arrived, rest assured – that no matter when you invite Moonflower into your family’s life, we will create a postpartum plan tailor-made to fit your needs.

But I don’t live in New Orleans — can you still help me?

Yes! Since all our visits can be virtual or via telephone, I can help you no matter where you call home.

Postpartum consulting sessions can also be done in person — and all Integrative Pediatrics visits are in person (click on “Integrative Pediatrics,” above, for more information).

Do we still need a Pediatrician?

Yes.  As a Postpartum Consultant or Integrative Pediatrics specialty physician, I serve as a complement to your family’s healthcare providers by being a resource for your family.  I attend to the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of your family as a whole by giving information and support.   Special attention is given to the new baby and to the birthing parent, whose physical healing and transformation is unique within the family unit.

If you are interested in an Integrative Pediatrics visit, please go to the “Integrative Pediatrics” section. I practice Integrative Pediatrics as a consulting physician, so I am an adjunct to your primary care provider, just like any other speciality physician (e.g., GI, ENT, Endocrinologist) would be.
